Judah Toby

Judah TobyMy name is Judah Toby and I am from a place called Boigu Island which is the most northerly inhabited island of Queensland and of Australia. It is part of the top-western group of the Torres Strait Islands, which lie in the Torres Strait separating Cape York Peninsula from the island of New Guinea. The mainland of Papua New Guinea is only 6 kilometers away from Boigu. Boigu has an area of 89.6 km².

I joined the IYMP program in early August 2015 after my Uncle Gabriel told me about this program and how it had helped him gain an apprenticeship and give him the support to complete it and some stable accommodation. I have always had some interest in the building industry whether it was building roads or construction. In the end I decided to do the Cert 3 in Civil Construction Plant Operations Course with the CDU. I completed the course recently and I have gained tickets or licenses in Tip Truck, Dozer, Excavator, Roller and also to operate small plant and equipment.

When I moved into the IYMP accommodation at Tasman, I was made to feel comfortable and this motivated me to do my course and complete it. I enjoy being a part of our own IYMP family in the accommodation with everyone helping to make sure the house is kept clean, we are eating well and cooking the meals we like to eat, with sometimes a healthier way. The skills that I have developed will assist with me living independently.

At times I miss my family at Boigu and Cairns but I also have family that live here in Darwin and I also play Rugby League for Palmerston, and I have made some good friends through that, so I am really comfortable living in Darwin with all this support of family and friends. The other thing that I enjoy about the IYMP is the Rec Activities we do such as going fishing, KingPin (Ten Pin Bowling etc.), Wave Pool, Movie nights at the Cinemas, sporting and music events, these things help me from not becoming homesick.

I have and would recommend IYMP to my friends and families back home, they’ve helped me do a lot throughout this year and I’m very thankful for everything. For next year I have applied for an Apprenticeship with the Darwin City Council as a Parks and Reserve Trainee.
