Eating a well-balanced healthy diet is crucial for achieving optimal health throughout life, food provides our bodies with the appropriate fuel it needs to develop and function properly. An unhealthy diet can increase an individual’s risk of developing diet-related disease/conditions including obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of cancers just to name a few. This is why the Indigenous Youth Mobility Pathways Project believes that eating in a way that respects and nurtures our bodies is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Food is what provides our bodies all the nutrients it needs to sustain life, provide energy and promote growth. As research shows, every part of our body down to each individual cell is made up of the food that we eat, so we really are literally “what we eat”. If our well designed bodies are being fed highly processed, nutrient dead food, we will end up with a low performing body, with low efficiency that will quickly wear out.
Our aim here at IYMP Healthy Lifestyles is to provide our sites with nutrient rich food by limiting the processed and packaged foods we purchase, be aware of the ingredients that are being consumed (reading labels) and eating as much “REAL”, fresh, seasonal food as possible.
